Dear Ward 20 Parents,
RE: Child Care Options during G20 School Closures
On Friday evening my office received notice that the Toronto District School Board and Toronto
Catholic District School Board are closing the following schools on Thursday June 24th and Friday June 25th, 2010:

  • Alpha Alternative JS
  • Beverley PS
  • Island Public/Natural Science School
  • Ogden Junior PS
  • Orde Street Junior PS
  • St. Joseph College School
  • St. Michael Choir School
  • The Waterfront School

We realize that this creates a difficult situation for parents in the downtown who must work and will not have alternate options for the care of their school age children this week.

Although other schools in the City remain open, all student transportation has been cancelled by all of the publicly funded school boards on Friday, June 25th.

Working with staff of local community-based agencies, along with support from the City Manager and my office, the following options have been made available free of charge.

Three centres will offer free programs for school-age children on Thursday and Friday of this week.

  • Alexandra Park Community Centre (Spadina & Dundas area)
  • Scadding Court Community Centre (Bathurst & Dundas)
  • University Settlement House (McCaul & Dundas area)

More details on this are available on the next page (see PDF).
My office has been regularly sending e-mail updates to residents about impacts of the G20 Summit.
If you would like to receive these updates, visit www.ward20.ca, where you can subscribe to my e-mail list to receive future updates. All past updates are also posted online.

As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch with my office at any time by calling 416 392-4044, or by emailing councillor_vaughan@toronto.ca.

Closing Announcement: Both Sites

June 18th, 2010 by Anna Gionet No comments »

The Toronto District School Board has informed Orde Day Care that Orde Street PS will be closed on  Thursday, June 24 and Friday, June 25 because of the potential for disruption caused by nearby G20 Summit-related protests. Although the TDSB has not yet decided to close Contact Alternative School,  where the Satellite site is located, our usual evacuation site for Satellite day care will not be available.

In light of the decision of the TDSB and because of the closure of our usual evacuation sites, the Board of Directors has made the difficult decision that both the Orde Street and Satellite sites will be closed on Thursday June 24 and Friday, June 25

The safety of our children, families and staff are our main concern, and we appreciate your understanding in this decision.

It is anticipated that both sites will be open Monday June 21 to Wednesday June 23, 2010. However, possible that further decisions will have to be made to either close one or both Orde locations, or reduce hours or relocate prior to Thursday, June 24th.

Please keep in mind that there may be traffic problems near both sites beginning Monday and likely worsening through the week.

We will continue to assess the information we receive from the RCMP, Toronto Police Services, the City of Toronto and the Toronto District School Board. We will keep you informed of any further changes in our daycare schedule. It is possible that further decisions will have to be made to either close one or both Orde locations, or reduce hours. Please let staff or Board members know if you have questions or concerns.
